Google limits free Gemini models and changes AI Plus access starting October 9

1–2 minutes

Google has announced that, from October 9, personal accounts without a Gemini subscription will only be able to use the Flash‑Lite model. The free plan will lose the Flash and Pro options, while AI Plus will no longer include Pro. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions will retain access to all three models.

New rules for each plan

  • Free: Flash‑Lite only.
  • AI Plus: Flash‑Lite and Flash.
  • AI Pro: Flash‑Lite, Flash and Pro.
  • AI Ultra: Flash‑Lite, Flash and Pro.

These changes apply to the Gemini app linked to personal accounts. Corporate or school accounts are unaffected, as they operate under separate terms.

Practical impact

Flash‑Lite is described as a model optimized for speed and everyday tasks, such as summarizing and generating ideas. Flash combines agility with reasoning capabilities, while Pro is designed for complex tasks, including mathematics and programming.

Free plan users will lose not only their query limit but also the ability to choose the other two models. The existing quota system, which renews the limit every five hours, was not introduced as part of these changes.

Which subscription still offers Pro

With this update, AI Pro becomes the lowest-tier subscription that still includes the Pro model. Despite being a paid service, AI Plus will no longer offer it. In a September survey on AI subscriptions in Brazil, prices were R$ 24.99 for AI Plus and R$ 96.99 for AI Pro. Prices and offers may vary at the time of purchase.
