Canva Launches Canva Craft, Its First AI Image Generator, Amid Strategic Moves and Valuation Fluctuations
Canva Craft: A Two‑Stage AI Image Engine
The new system, named Canva Craft, operates in two distinct phases. In the initial phase, the model parses a user’s textual prompt and constructs a detailed blueprint that outlines spatial relationships, relative sizing, visual hierarchy, and text generation cues. The second phase then renders an image that can reach up to 2K resolution and supports roughly 30 different aspect ratios, catering to a wide array of platform requirements.
This architecture enables the creation of visuals with precise object details and clear typography, while also allowing users to edit specific elements without altering the surrounding composition.
Training on Canva’s Design Library, Not Photographs
Unlike many competitors that rely on photographic datasets, Canva trained its model exclusively on human‑crafted templates drawn from its own library. The training set includes posters, social media posts, presentations, infographics, menus, and other typography‑rich layouts, ensuring the output aligns with design best practices.
From Generated Image to Editable Design with Magic Layers
Images produced by Canva Craft can be transformed into layered designs through Magic Layers, the company’s image‑to‑design transformer introduced last year. This capability bridges the gap between raw AI‑generated visuals and fully editable design files.
Integration and API Strategy
All users can access the generator directly from the Dream Lab tab within the Canva platform, and developers can integrate it via the Canva API. Furthermore, Canva plans to embed the model into third‑party chat assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini through its MCP framework.
Having previously depended on a variety of external image models, Canva expects the proprietary engine to lower API expenses while also delivering improved quality control and faster generation times.
Financial Context and Valuation Shifts
The company projected $4 billion in revenue for the previous year. However, it recently reduced its growth outlook for 2026, prompting external analysts to revise its valuation downward from $42 billion to $35 billion.
Future Plans and Cost‑Efficient Variants
In 2024, Canva acquired the media generation platform Leonardo.ai, whose researchers contributed expertise to the new image model. Additionally, Canva is preparing two streamlined versions of the technology—Craftfast and Craft‑ultrafast—which are slated for imminent release and are designed to be more cost‑effective.
Taken together, the debut of Canva Craft, the integration with Magic Layers, and the forthcoming low‑cost variants illustrate Canva’s push to own its creative pipeline, reduce reliance on external providers, and stabilize its financial trajectory amid shifting market expectations.
