Microsoft Launches AI-Ready Surface PCs Powered by Nvidia RTX Spark and Updated Windows 11
Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark Dev Box Specs and Pricing
The initiative traces back to a June announcement from Nvidia, which said it had secured agreements with Microsoft and other PC makers to build AI‑ready Windows PCs around its RTX Spark chip. At a San Francisco Tech Week event on Wednesday, Microsoft unveiled two new devices built around that chip. The flagship Surface Laptop Ultra comes in two base configurations: a model starting at $2,600 and a higher‑performance version beginning at $3,700. Buyers can add more memory and storage, pushing the price up to $5,900. Microsoft noted that the top‑of‑the‑line configuration is already sold out.
The company also introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a workstation priced at $6,000 that ships pre‑loaded with Microsoft development tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7.
AI‑Centric Hardware and the New “Execution Containers” Feature
Both machines are engineered to run AI models locally on the device without requiring an internet connection. The hardware combines a CPU, GPU, unified memory and enhanced cooling to handle on‑device inference. They ship with a refreshed version of Windows 11 that adds “Execution Containers,” a sandboxing mechanism designed to isolate AI agents.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella explained, “One of the things we realized in the last 3‑4 years is that just having a model doesn’t do much for anything. You really do need to orchestrate, and you need to have memory outside of the model. You need to have this harnessed layer that is able to take multiple models plus context, plus memory, and the action space.”
Nadella added that Microsoft is opening this capability to any agent, not just its own applications. “That’s what the Windows platform is all about going forward,” he said, emphasizing that Execution Containers will be available to all Windows 11 users.
Developer‑Focused Incentives and Broader Use Cases
Recognizing that developers—particularly those in Silicon Valley—often favor MacBook Pros, Microsoft is offering a trade‑in discount of up to $1,000 for customers who exchange a MacBook Pro for a new Surface PC. Beyond AI workloads, the company asserts that the powerful graphics processing makes the devices suitable for content creation, video editing, and gaming.
Dell Joins the RTX Spark AI PC Wave
Microsoft was not alone in highlighting Nvidia‑based AI hardware on Wednesday. Dell announced the Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition PC, also powered by the RTX Spark chip. The laptop is now available for preorder at Best Buy, with shipments scheduled for October, and is priced at $3,800.
