Qualcomm Rolls Out AI‑Centric Snapdragon 8 Elite Chips, Signaling a Phone‑Centric AI Future
AI Sensing Hub Enables On‑Device Personalization and Voice Agents
Qualcomm today unveiled two flagship processors at its annual Snapdragon Summit: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both chips feature a new sensing hub capable of executing compact models of up to 200 million parameters. This hub lets smartphones run a personal scribe locally, distinguish between speakers, and build usage‑based memory to suggest automated tasks. According to Qualcomm, the platform can host a complete voice‑in, voice‑out agent entirely on the device.
Performance Leap and Mixture‑of‑Experts Support
The Gen 6 core includes an accelerator optimized for efficient model execution. The Extreme variant pushes this further, supporting a 30‑billion‑parameter mixture‑of‑experts (MoE) model that activates only the necessary subset for each task. By comparison, Apple showcased a 20‑billion‑parameter MoE model at its June Worldwide Developer Conference, the most advanced of its third‑generation foundation models.
Camera, Audio, and Video Upgrades
Both chips deliver pixel‑level camera control, enhanced stabilization, and motion understanding for pro‑level photography. The Extreme version adds support for 8K video at 60 fps and ultra‑HD slow motion at 4K 240 fps, along with the new Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec. Audio improvements include AI‑driven vocal enhancement and noise reduction, plus Qualcomm’s voice‑bubble technology that isolates a user’s voice during calls.
Early Adopters and Industry Outlook
Motorola immediately leveraged the platform, announcing the Motorola Signature 27 smartphone powered by the Snapdragon Gen 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, with general availability later this year. Qualcomm also revealed it is developing more than 40 AI‑focused devices, reinforcing the belief that smartphones will become the primary hub for AI interactions. This view has been echoed by Nothing co‑founder Carl Pei and, more recently, by Apple CEO John Ternus during the iPhone Duo launch earlier this month.
