Saturday Night Live skewers Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in scathing AI parody
Weekend Update segment lampoons AI industry’s doom warnings
In a recent Saturday Night Live broadcast, the show took aim at recent alarmist rhetoric from leaders in the artificial‑intelligence field. Weekend Update anchor Michael Che opened the piece, stumbling over the pronunciation of Anthropic chief Dario Amodei’s surname while framing the CEO as someone who had appeared to endorse a former employee’s claim that AI could annihilate humanity.
Cast member Jane Wickline then stepped into the role of Amodei, complete with a conspicuous wig and a deliberately halting delivery. Her portrayal quickly devolved into a dramatic dialogue reminiscent of Gollum, complete with a dark alter‑ego. At one point she declared,
“AI is the devil and I its maker.”
Wickline’s Amodei went on to assure viewers that AI executives shared a common stance:
“We do not condone what we are doing.”She then offered a paradoxical defense of the technology, stating,
“AI is not a weapon, it’s a tool: A tool for building weapons. And I urge you to urge me to stop.”
When the sketch turned to the purported benefits of AI, the faux CEO offered a bleak prognosis for cancer:
“Put it this way: In 10 years, there’s about a 10% chance that cancer won’t be a problem for anyone.”
The parody encapsulates the broader cultural clash between AI optimists and those who warn of existential risk, using humor to highlight the sometimes contradictory statements from industry leaders. By casting Amodei as both a reluctant prophet and a conflicted creator, SNL underscored how the public discourse around AI has become a stage for both earnest concern and theatrical exaggeration.
