Space, Pages, and Collaborative Slides Expand ChatGPT into Workplace

At its DevDay conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, OpenAI introduced a suite of tools that turn ChatGPT into a collaborative workspace rivaling traditional office software. The centerpiece, Space, is a shared environment where teams can work alongside the chatbot and OpenAI’s AI agents, called Dots, to manage files, check team channels, and execute tasks.

CEO Sam Altman described Space as a living repository for pages and files, allowing users to give specific instructions such as monitoring a channel and updating the workspace with the findings.

OpenAI also unveiled Pages, a word‑processing application designed for joint work between humans and agents. The company positions Pages as a competitor to Google Docs and Microsoft Word, enabling users to write, research, generate charts, create images, and visualize data within a single document.

In addition, OpenAI announced collaborative slides, its answer to PowerPoint. Users can create presentations simply by describing them to ChatGPT. Once generated, multiple workers and agents can edit, comment, and co‑author the slides. An OpenAI representative said the feature will be released to users in the coming weeks, a timeline clarified in an update on Tuesday, September 29.

Broader Industry Shift and Competitive Landscape

While OpenAI moves deeper into Microsoft’s core market, Microsoft and other firms such as Salesforce are accelerating their own AI initiatives. Over the past year, both companies have launched numerous AI products as the software sector adapts to a rapidly changing technological environment.

UPDATE Tuesday Sept. 29: This story was updated to clarify the release timeline for Slides.
