Granola Adds Dictation Capability to Challenge Wispr
Feature Details and Platform Rollout
Granola, the startup best known for its AI-powered meeting notetaker, introduced a dictation function today, allowing users to speak into any Mac application and have their words automatically cleaned, formatted, and inserted as text. Activation is as simple as holding the Fn key while speaking. The company says the tool works universally across applications, enabling users to compose notes, draft prompts, and reply to emails or messages without typing.

Granola announced that the dictation feature will soon be available on iOS and Windows, expanding beyond its current Mac implementation.
Competitive Landscape and Company Valuations
The move comes after Wispr, a company valued at $2 billion that built its reputation on dictation software, launched its own meeting notetaker earlier this year. Granola, valued at $1.5 billion, has historically focused on automating meeting capture and note organization. Wispr, meanwhile, is investing in proprietary AI models through a dedicated research lab that explores novel human‑computer interaction techniques.
Broader Industry Trend Toward Integrated Voice Tools
Granola and Wispr are not alone in blending capabilities. Startups such as Fireflies, Speechify, and Monologue have also evolved into multifeature platforms that combine meeting transcription with dictation. This shift marks a departure from the earlier strategy of delivering a single, highly refined function, reflecting a growing belief that capturing users’ speech across multiple contexts can drive higher engagement and retention.
