How NotebookLM uses AI to turn PDFs into audio summaries

1–2 minutes

How the feature works

Google’s AI tool, NotebookLM, can convert PDF documents into an audio conversation that highlights the key points of the material. The Audio Summary feature uses AI-generated voices to create a narration based on the sources provided by the user.

Customizing the summary

As well as the full version, which simulates a dialogue between two presenters, you can generate a short summary with a single narrator, lasting less than two minutes. The user can set the language, choose the “Summary” format, and select the “short” duration. You can also include specific instructions, such as prioritizing the three most important ideas and using simple language.

Step-by-step guide to creating audio

  • Log in to Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) with a Google account and create a new notebook.
  • Add the desired PDF as a source.
  • Go to the “Studio” panel and select “Audio Summary.”
  • Choose the desired format, set the language, and enter detailed instructions.
  • Confirm the generation and wait for the file to be created.

How to improve the quality of the result

Before starting the generation, it’s worth defining the purpose of the summary: to highlight research findings, explain academic concepts, or present data from a report. Clear instructions help focus the content and avoid unnecessary details. If the notebook contains multiple sources, you can select only the documents that should guide the audio. After generation, the user can adjust the playback speed and download the file to listen offline.

Important notes

The audio summary does not replace critical reading of the original material. Google’s own documentation warns that AI-generated narrations may contain inaccuracies or omissions. Therefore, it is recommended to verify the main information in the original document.

Practical use

For those who need to study, review reports, or follow documents during daily activities, NotebookLM offers a convenient way to access information in audio format, provided the user provides precise guidance and performs the necessary verification.
