Airbnb Curbs Guest Chores, Igniting Host Backlash
New Checkout Rules Bar Hosts from Demanding Household Tasks
Effective for bookings made on or after November 20, Airbnb has instituted a policy that forbids hosts from requiring guests to strip beds, wash and put away dishes, start laundry, or take out trash. The move addresses long‑standing complaints that travelers, who already pay cleaning fees, are forced to perform a checklist of chores before departure.
Hosts Push Back, Citing Property Care and Cost Concerns
Some property owners argue that basic cleaning duties are essential for hygiene and for reducing the financial burden of preparing a unit for the next guest. In community forums, one host warned that the rule shifts Airbnb toward a hotel model, eroding the personal touch that distinguishes private rentals. The host, who has listed on the platform for twelve years, said the change could lead to withdrawal of their listing. They emphasized that guests who agree to handle dishes and linens receive a unique experience, and that prospective renters can review the listing beforehand.
Exceptions Allow Specific Requests for Conservation and Safety
Airbnb permits hosts to ask guests to conserve water during drought conditions or to use bear‑proof containers in wildlife‑rich areas. These limited exemptions recognize circumstances where guest cooperation directly impacts environmental or safety concerns.
Broader Efforts to Align Guest and Host Expectations
The chore restriction follows previous initiatives aimed at improving transparency and fairness. In 2024, the company faced criticism over hidden cleaning fees added after booking. A year earlier, Airbnb reported that more than 260,000 hosts had lowered or eliminated their cleaning fees. Beginning in May 2025, search results worldwide began displaying total prices, including fees but excluding taxes, by default.
Potential Impact on the Platform
It remains uncertain how many hosts will view the new restrictions as a reason to leave the platform. Conversely, travelers seeking a rental without the obligation to clean after paying for housekeeping may find the policy appealing, potentially expanding Airbnb’s appeal to a broader audience.
