Jev Becomes Vercel’s Fastest‑Adopted AI Model in Record Time

Record‑Breaking Adoption Within Two Weeks

According to Vercel’s data released on Thursday, Jev—created by TypeSafe AI—was being used by 35% of paid teams just fourteen days after its limited release on September 15. This uptake was nearly twice the reach of the second most popular model, Sonnet 5.5, making Jev the fastest‑adopted model in the platform’s history for its first two weeks.

Lightweight Design Sparks Competition

Jev was built as a lightweight decision engine that selects among a small set of predetermined outputs. By restricting the output space, the model runs cheaper and faster than alternatives such as Sonnet, making it especially useful for quickly classifying large volumes of data. The approach has generated considerable buzz and prompted rivals including OpenAI and Amazon to announce competing offerings, though concrete usage numbers had been scarce until Vercel’s report.

Vercel’s findings come from its AI gateway, a unified API service comparable to OpenRouter. While the gateway provides only a partial view—tending to undercount major labs like OpenAI and Anthropic that run their own APIs—it confirms that the excitement around Jev translated into real usage. Vercel itself was an early adopter, swapping Jev in for GPT‑6 Luna to filter harmful commands.

Open source models now dominate the gateway, accounting for more than 70% of the tokens processed and roughly 25% of total spending. Meanwhile, spending on frontier laboratory models has increased tenfold, even as their share of overall expenditure remains modest. The data suggest that frontier and open source options may complement each other rather than compete directly.
