How to train AI agents to perform complex tasks accurately

2–3 minutes

AI agents can search for information, access tools, execute process steps, and make decisions along the way. To use these capabilities effectively, it’s not enough to simply state the desired outcome. It’s essential to provide detailed guidance that specifies what needs to be done, the boundaries to respect, and how to handle unexpected situations.

Experts from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic recommend several practices to ensure agents understand and follow instructions correctly.

1. Clearly define the goal

Start by explaining exactly what the agent should accomplish. Instead of a vague instruction like “manage my emails,” specify the task: identify urgent messages, separate newsletters, and prepare responses for specific types of requests. The more concrete the goal, the less room there is for differing interpretations.

2. Break the task into smaller steps

A large task can be organized into sequential actions. For example, the instruction might specify that the agent first consult a source, then compare the data, and finally produce a report. This breakdown reduces ambiguity and makes it easier to track the workflow.

3. Define what to do with incomplete information

The agent doesn’t always receive all the data needed to complete a task. Therefore, instructions should anticipate situations like missing fields, unexpected requests, or conflicting information. You can specify that the agent should ask the user for data, halt execution, or follow an alternative path.

4. Specify authorized actions

If the agent has access to tools, make it clear when and for what purpose each tool can be used. Ambiguous descriptions increase the risk of incorrect calls. It’s recommended to detail the inputs, outputs, and functions of available tools.

5. Provide examples of the expected result

When the format of the answer is important, examples can be clearer than a lengthy explanation. They help the agent identify patterns in language, structure, and content. Use examples close to the actual situation and include varied cases to prevent the agent from simply copying a single pattern.

6. Set explicit boundaries

It’s equally important to inform the agent of what it should not do. This may include actions that require human authorization, sources that should not be consulted, or situations where execution needs to be stopped. Since agents operate with greater autonomy than a typical chatbot, these boundaries are especially important.

7. Continuously test and refine instructions

A first version rarely resolves all cases. The best approach is to observe where the agent interprets an instruction differently than expected and adjust the text based on these results. OpenAI recommends an iterative approach: test, review the response, and refine the instructions as needed.

For professionals new to working with AI agents, the skill goes beyond knowing how to write good prompts. It’s necessary to translate business goals into clear instructions, anticipate exceptions, and assess whether the agent is actually performing the expected work. As AI tools take on increasingly complex tasks, this type of expertise is likely to become even more valuable.
