Google Cloud plans to double its AI infrastructure in Brazil by 2030, focusing on local processing, GPUs, and submarine cables
Google Cloud has announced plans to double its artificial intelligence infrastructure capacity in Brazil by 2030. The plan does not involve building new data centers but instead focuses on expanding processing power, storage, and high-performance computing, as well as improving connectivity through submarine cables.
Expansion strategy
Speaking at the Google Cloud Summit Brazil in São Paulo, Eduardo López, President of Google Cloud for Latin America, said that investments are driven by market demand. “All investments are linked to demand,” he said. “Our growth forecast for Brazilian companies is based on corporate AI usage. We plan to double our capacity in Brazil.”
López explained that the expansion will be guided by three key pillars: local data processing, provision of specialized hardware, and improved connectivity.
Local data processing
From October 15, the web version of Gemini Enterprise will process customer data within Brazil for users of the Gemini 3.5 Flash model. This change complies with data sovereignty requirements and local regulations. Google Cloud reiterates that customer data is not used to train its models without explicit consent.
Hardware and connectivity
The São Paulo cloud region already offers virtual machines equipped with Nvidia RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs, designed for heavy and real-time inference workloads.
López emphasized that connectivity is as important as data centers. “When discussing infrastructure, there are two critical variables: data centers and connectivity,” he said. Google’s data center locations follow the company’s submarine cable routes, which explains why investments in cables connecting Brazil to the United States via São Paulo have been prioritized over new cities.
Prospects for new cables
When asked about the possibility of a new submarine cable reaching Fortaleza, López neither confirmed nor denied the idea. He noted that cable decisions are made globally and consider proximity to existing data centers, which are currently concentrated mainly near São Paulo.
Data center sector context
The Brazilian data center market is experiencing strong growth. In the first half of 2026, the country received 106 megawatts of new capacity and could add another 134 megawatts by December, according to consultancy JLL. The Data Center Brazil 2026 report forecasts around $8 billion in investments in the sector this year.
Where Google currently has data centers
Google currently operates 30 active data centers in 11 countries. In South America, the company has only two facilities: one in Canelones, Uruguay, and another in Quilicura, near Santiago, Chile. Google does not yet have its own data center in Brazil.
Frequently Asked Questions
