Prompt engineers in Brazil can earn up to R$26,100 per month, but the role goes beyond just writing commands
Salary projections by Robert Half
According to Robert Half’s 2026 Salary Guide, monthly salaries for prompt engineers in Brazil range from R$19,050 to R$26,100, with a median of R$22,000. These figures are projections and do not guarantee that professionals will earn this amount solely for creating instructions for AI tools.
What does a prompt engineer’s day-to-day work look like?
In practice, the job involves testing instructions, structuring contexts, evaluating language model responses, and turning these techniques into processes that can be applied to real systems. Professionals may also work with RAG, a technique that allows models to consult external sources before responding, or develop agents capable of performing tasks.
The role is still rare
A 2025 academic study analyzed 20,662 LinkedIn job ads and found only 72 vacancies with the title “prompt engineer,” less than 0.5% of the sample. These positions required knowledge of AI, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and expertise in creating prompts.
In Brazil, consultancies such as Qaracter and IBM have already advertised positions under the title “Prompt Engineer” or “Prompt Engineer/LLM.” At Qaracter, the role is for a financial project in São Paulo, with CLT employment and the use of ChatGPT and Gemini. At IBM, the position involves developing voice and text conversational agents.
Who is hiring?
Demand is concentrated in technology companies, consultancies, and organizations that develop AI-based products. Recent employers include IBM, BairesDev, Qaracter, and other companies specializing in artificial intelligence solutions. A LinkedIn search identified 27 “Prompt Engineer” vacancies in the country, 21 of which were classified as senior positions.
Other job titles, such as AI Engineer, AI Specialist, Conversational AI Engineer, and Applied AI Engineer, may also include responsibilities related to prompts, model evaluation, and AI integration.
In practice, salary is not limited to writing prompts
Robert Half’s salary range should be interpreted with caution. R$19,050 corresponds to the 25th percentile, R$22,000 to the median, and R$26,100 to the 75th percentile. These are projections, not guarantees.
Data from Glassdoor shows few specific records for prompt engineers in São Paulo, with salaries ranging from R$6,000 to R$10,000. The scarcity of data means comparisons should be made cautiously.
A Qaracter job posting for São Paulo, which includes benefits and CLT employment, demonstrates that a salary of R$20,000 is associated with a specialized AI role that combines technical knowledge, communication skills, and the application of technology in real processes—not just the act of writing commands.
The skill remains valuable even when the role changes
Research on the job market shows that, although the specific occupation is still rare, prompt engineering has established itself as a distinct set of skills. Data from edX, based on Lightcast, ranked prompt engineering among the top AI skills mentioned in job ads in 2025.
For professionals, knowing how to craft effective instructions improves everyday use of AI tools. However, transforming this knowledge into reliable, measurable, and business-integrated solutions requires additional skills.
As a result, the market now offers specific positions for prompt engineers, but the skill is also present in roles related to engineering, product development, automation, agent development, and applied AI.
