Lambda Secures $4 Billion Funding Round Ahead of Planned 2027 IPO

Massive Capital Raise Signals Investor Confidence in AI Infrastructure

Cloud‑computing startup Lambda announced a new financing round of up to $4 billion at a $14.5 billion pre‑money valuation, according to The Wall Street Journal. The deal, led by Coatue Management and Blackstone, could represent the company’s final private capital raise before an anticipated public offering in 2027.

A confidential investor letter reviewed by the Journal revealed that Lambda’s order backlog surged from $15 billion in June to $50 billion in September. The bulk of that increase—approximately $35 billion—stems from a commitment by AI lab Anthropic, which signed a major agreement with Lambda in late August.

While the backlog jump underscores strong demand for AI‑driven compute, it also ties Lambda’s soaring valuation—already elevated since its 2025 funding round—to the continued payments from Anthropic. Investors remain eager to back providers of scarce GPU capacity, particularly when those providers have secured contracts with leading AI research labs.

For neocloud operators such as Lambda, the challenge lies less in demand than in financing the infrastructure needed to meet it. Data‑center construction is typically debt‑funded; Lambda recently added $1 billion of debt financing just last week. Lenders are growing more selective about extending credit, making the new equity raise both a strategic move for setting IPO pricing and a way to secure additional capital before the heightened scrutiny of public markets.

The IPO timeline has shifted. Originally slated for this year, Lambda postponed the offering amid broader market uncertainty. If the IPO proceeds, Lambda would join a cohort of Nvidia‑backed neoclouds—CoreWeave and Nebius—that now rely on public equity to fund their data‑center expansions. British neocloud Nscale filed for an IPO last month and is expected to begin trading soon.

Lambda, Coatue Management, and Blackstone have not responded to requests for comment.
