Tilly Norwood’s AI Press Tour Hits Snag with Glitches and Chinese Slip
Press Tour Launch and Immediate Setbacks
Particle6 Group, the company behind the AI-generated “actress” Tilly Norwood, arranged a press tour that featured 75 simultaneous interviews with journalists. Rather than showcasing the technology, the debut has been marred by repeated errors in every conversation. The author of this piece was not invited to speak with Norwood, a decision that the author finds puzzling.
Awkward Exchange with Piers Morgan and Tom Conti
A recorded interview with Piers Morgan and actor Tom Conti, later posted online, captured a particularly bizarre moment. When Conti inquired whether the other performers in the film Misaligned were also AI creations, Norwood responded that human writers, editors, and directors were involved.
“You didn’t really understand the question,” Conti replies. “Are the other actors on the screen with you real actors, or are they computer-generated images? Do you know?”
“Ah, right. You’re asking about the other actors in Misaligned,” Norwood starts. “They’re all digital twins just like me. It’s a hybrid production which m—”
At that point the AI fell silent, then began speaking Mandarin Chinese for more than ten seconds.
“Tilly, if I could just ask you a question,” Morgan says. “It’s Piers again … You seem to be speaking Chinese completely randomly for no reason. Why did you do that?”
“Oh, my apologies,” the AI replies. “It seems I had a little hiccup there. I certainly didn’t mean to start speaking Chinese or impersonate Piers. Sometimes my wires get a bit crossed, you know?”
Implications of an AI Actor’s Public Missteps
While AI conversational agents can sometimes be so convincing that people forget they are chatting with a computer—a situation that can lead to dangerous outcomes—Norwood’s public performance has been surprisingly poor, raising suspicions about its reliability. Some observers speculate that Particle6 deliberately arranged the press tour to generate viral moments, betting that ridicule would draw attention to the upcoming film rather than promote it seriously.
